Apartment Kitchen Transformation Creates Living Room-Like Ambiance
When Teresa Rudolph decided to renovate her apartment kitchen, she had a clear vision: create a warm, inviting space that felt more like a comfortable living area than a sterile cooking zone. Her approach centered around incorporating vintage elements with modern functionality, resulting in a stunning transformation that proves kitchens can be both practical and cozy.
Starting Point and Vision
The original kitchen featured stark white walls, checkered flooring, and standard white cabinetry along one wall. Teresa, who gravitates toward minimalist and modern design principles, envisioned a space free from upper cabinets to prevent unnecessary accumulation of items. Her goal was to blend contemporary elements with vintage character pieces.
The Limewash Paint Treatment
The most dramatic change came through Teresa’s choice of wall treatment. She applied limewash paint directly over existing textured white wallpaper, using Kalklitir paint in the shade Elle. This technique instantly added an old-world, sophisticated atmosphere to the space. Teresa recommends mixing additional water into the paint for smoother application, particularly when working over textured surfaces. While she acknowledges that starting with a blank wall would be ideal, her method proved effective for renters or those working with existing wall treatments.
Vintage Centerpiece
A key element in achieving the desired aesthetic was Teresa’s antique workbench, which she purchased years earlier for €300 through a German classifieds platform and personally restored. This versatile piece has served multiple functions throughout her home over the years, including as a desk and bookshelf, but finds its perfect purpose in the kitchen as both a work surface and display area for herbs.
Creative Lighting Solution
Faced with the challenge of no existing ceiling electrical connection, Teresa found an innovative solution for her contemporary light fixture. She ran the cable along the ceiling and wall to reach the nearest outlet, proving that design obstacles can often be overcome with creative thinking.
Additional Design Elements
To complete the transformation, Teresa incorporated several thoughtful details:
- Replaced the original checkered flooring with warm wood planks
- Added open wall shelving to display glassware
- Installed a shelf in the tall rear window for houseplant display
- Used a tension rod system for hanging plants
The result is a kitchen that successfully balances functionality with comfort, creating what Teresa describes as a non-sterile environment that maintains its practical purpose while feeling genuinely cozy and welcoming.
