Babybel Launches New Protein-Enhanced Snack Cheese with Probiotics
The iconic wax-wrapped cheese brand has entered the functional food market with a new product that delivers enhanced nutritional benefits while maintaining its familiar format. The company has introduced a protein and probiotic-fortified version of its popular mini cheese wheels, targeting health-conscious consumers seeking convenient snacking options.
This enhanced cheese product contains five grams of protein per serving, along with one billion live and active LGG probiotics, all packed into a 50-calorie portion. The formulation uses 100 percent real cheese and maintains a simple ingredient profile with just four components, staying true to the brand’s commitment to quality ingredients.
The new offering represents the company’s response to growing consumer demand for snacks that provide functional benefits beyond basic nutrition. Rather than forcing customers to choose between traditional protein sources like bars and shakes or probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, this product combines both benefits in the brand’s signature portable format.
According to Jessica Dillon, Senior Brand Director for the brand, the development addresses a clear market opportunity. The company recognized that shoppers increasingly want snacks delivering both protein and probiotics, and they saw a chance to meet this demand without compromising on taste or convenience.
The enhanced cheese maintains the distinctive red wax coating that has made the brand instantly recognizable in lunch boxes and snack drawers for decades. This familiar packaging ensures the product fits seamlessly into existing consumer routines, whether stored in gym bags, backpacks, or office desk drawers.
The protein-enhanced version joins an expanded product lineup that now includes nine different varieties. The portfolio encompasses the original formula, reduced-fat options, specialty flavors like Gouda and White Cheddar, plus plant-based cheese alternatives to cater to diverse dietary preferences.
Distribution is rolling out strategically across major retail channels. The product launched initially at Target stores and select retailers, with Walmart and Kroger locations beginning to stock the item in March. The company plans broader nationwide availability throughout 2026 as production scales to meet anticipated demand.
This launch reflects broader industry trends toward functional foods that deliver specific health benefits while maintaining the convenience and taste consumers expect from their favorite snack brands. The combination of familiar format with enhanced nutrition positions the product to capture market share in the growing protein snack category.
